My interest in lettering began while working as a stone conservator in and around Edinburgh for ten years. Working on many historic buildings and monuments, I developed an appreciation for these traditional skills and decided to pursue lettercutting and carving further. My formal lettering training included a (Historic Environment Scotland) Craft Fellowship with The Colin Braid Stone Workshop in Midlothian and a Lettering Arts Trust Apprenticeship with Eric Marland in Cambridge. I now work from my Edinburgh studio, taking private commissions for memorials, plaques and other lettering projects. I work mainly with stone (slate, sandstone, limestone) and wood. I very much enjoy the process of working with a client to realise a unique piece that hopefully surpasses their expectations. I regularly exhibit my work, this is a creative outlet for me and I believe a vital part of improving my artistic practice. I love to experiment with new materials, letterforms, carving methods and design. In doing so I hope to expand my ideas and skill base while staying true to the good design ‘principles’ I learned during my formal training. I am a registered artist of Memorials By Artists and current Secretary of the SLA.
