Scottish Letter Cutters Association SLA

As lettering artists, whether making memorials, art pieces or signage, the primary focus of our work is the design process.

This process begins with simple pencil and paper at the drawing board, some members also using the computer to assist with design refinement. Most inscriptions involve the development of new or adapted letter forms. Letter design comes from a response to the text, the client, the choice of material and the artist’s passion and interests at the time.

The choice of stone, wood or other materials depends on the purpose of the piece of work, the location, the type of lettering and the client’s preferences.

Our concern in the design is with form, rhythm, spacing and overall composition. Once the design has been developed to the satisfaction of all concerned, we source and prepare the material, then transfer the design  onto the chosen material ready for cutting. The cutting process in both wood and stone is done with mallet and chisel in the traditional way.
